DoG Dev update (New Horizons update)


Hi folks! Story is an important part of the modern game experience and I wanted DoG to  explore this idea. Now the Jam is over, I have taken some time  to really organise and plan the deeper elements.  Central to this is the story generation software. The code used in the jam was basic (due to the short development time)  so this is the first area of focus for me.  Data which started out as either code or text files are now implemented into the game with .json files. This flexibility means I can now make the game modular and this will help with the workflow.  The story is to be fleshed out  ready for implementation, I'll be spending more time writing than testing (benefits of modular game design). 

Central to the game is the Collector unit. So I have been working on expanding the artwork  and adding features like shields, graphic representation of the upgrades like speed and armour, and more sound effects to let the player know what's happening with material collection.  This is the first artwork which will feature  brief cut scenes to 'immerse' the story into the game environment. 

A defining feature for DoG I hoped to have ready for the Jam is the JunkOcopter. Although the animations, artwork and building parts were all in the game, the junkOcopter it's self had no AI.  This will change as this unique collector unit will be a front line asset to use not only in the collection of materials but also as part of unfolding the story. 

A ton of environment artwork is in the pipe so I will release snippets here and there. 

Central to New Horizons is an AI opponent who will respond to a) the player actions in the game level, b) the story choices made as the game progresses. Although no coding is yet implemented, I have made plans for the background 'blocks' I'm going to need. 

Lastly, the software I am developing to create the story is called INX (makes the .json files talked about above). I will release more information when I have something presentable, however, rest assured the program I have written so far is close to what I originally envisioned and there is scope to expand this idea further. 

The next major update will be in the New Horizons format although at the time of writing it is too early to say when I will be in a position to release a playable version.
